This solo bassoon piece is highly melodic and expressive. It uses the full range of the instrument within a modal folk idiom and is loosely structured in sonata form. The two main contrasting themes have an improvisatory character. This is particularly true of the second theme which includes composed-out forms of ornamentation and decoration. The piece is highly accessible for the listener and is appropriate for most standards, including students and professional players. The work can also be used as a virtuosic encore piece.
