Female Composers and Musicians in Focus: Gender Issues on the Rhine, Main, and Thames, Vol. 49 Collection / Songbook - Sheet Music

While regional music history research has been established in musicology for decades, the focus on women's contributions to music history has only gained increasing importance in recent years: whether as patrons, educators, singers, instrumentalists, or composers – music in previous centuries would have been inconceivable without women. This anthology brings together the contributions presented in 2023 at a conference of the Working Group for Middle Rhenish Music History at Engers Castle on the Rhine. For the first time, the conference specifically addressed gender issues within a regional historical context. The result is an astonishingly broad panorama of women's musical activities. The fact that this volume also looks at other regions, primarily England and London, and explores the musical activities of women elsewhere, is due to the cooperation between the Working Group for Middle Rhenish Music History and the Villa Musica Rhineland-Palatinate State Foundation, also based in Mainz, which is committed to the cultivation and promotion of chamber music – beyond regional boundaries. The conclusion: not only for the Middle Rhine region, but also for other regions, the musical activities of women have played and continue to play a crucial role. Much remains to be explored in the future, but a start has been made.
