Variants on "It is Well for My Soul" for solo marimba   arr. by Dan Heslink

Words by Horatio Spafford and music by Philip Bliss

This popular hymn appears in many Christian fellowships as a sublime expression of spiritual peace. Some listeners point to its ability to inspire the faith and trust that comes as God’s gift. Others appreciate the believer’s encouragement to overcome life’s difficult experiences. Much is said about hymnist Horatio Spafford’s personal victory in overcoming despondency over the deaths of his children.

This arrangement begins with a four-measure introduction derived from countermelodies occurring later in the movement. There are four short variations, or variants, on the hymn melody. The first is in the manner of a stomp chorus, and should not be taken too slowly. The second unfolds over a repetitive bass melody that is so cohesive it takes on the character of a counter-theme.

Following that is a triple meter contrasting theme. Derived from the half-step motions of the second variant’s bass pattern, it is originally-composed. Some intricate division of treble and bass materials occur between the two hands. The recommended sticking in the score assumes numbering of the mallets 1-4, left-to-right. A return to the stomp chorus texture involves melodic development of the hymn tune, and the final variant is a 4-part harmonic presentation of considerable chord density. Although the two hands complement each other harmonically, the left hand is given some extra contrapuntal independence through parallel 3ths and 6ths. The movement ends vigorously with diminutive references to some of the arrangement’s characteristic rhythms.

The repertoire of arrangements for marimba solo which are appropriate for Christian settings is sparse; it is hoped that this work will assist marimbaists who wish to play sacred music. These variants would serve equally well in a percussion recital or a church service. In church this work would be appropriate as special music or as an offertory. Performance duration is 4:25.
