Fanfare La Peri by Paul Dukas Brass Ensemble - Digital Sheet Music
By Paul DukasPaul Dukas was born in Paris and studied at the Conservatoire there, where he was a friend of Claude Debussy. After completing his studies he found work as an orchestrator and critic. Although Dukas wrote a fair amount of music, he destroyed many of his pieces out of dissatisfaction with them, and only a few remain. One of his surviving works is the ballet La Peri first presented in Paris in 1912. Inspired by a poetic oriental legend, the ballet was highly popular throughout France. It was Dukas's last major work and Dukas went on to become a well known teacher of composition in his remaining years. The ballet was preceded by a striking fanfare for 11 brass instruments which in itself became part of France’s nationalistic culture. This popular fanfare brings together the best of the culture at that time: nationalism, impressionism and a strong poetic sense of the dramatic within an original symphonic form. This special arrangement presents that fanfare reduced to a setting for brass quintet losing none of its original quality.
