Fables of Faubus was composed by bassist Charles Mingus as a direct response to the actions of Arkansas governor Orval Faubus, who sent the National Guard to prevent the racial integration of Little Rock Central High School in 1957. This later became known as the Little Rock Crisis. Originally composed with lyrics, these were cut by Columbia Records who refused to have them on the final recording. An instrumental version was therefore recorded and included in the album Mingus Ah Hum. Mingus returned to Fables of Faubus often in his later years, recording it several more times and frequently playing it in concerts.
This arrangement can be played by a flexible band with any number of horns, split between four parts. Each of the four parts can be played by multiple instruments. If fewer than four horns are available, the parts should be prioritised in order, with part 1 the most essential. This piece can therefore be played by a solo, duet, trio or quartet of horns with an accompanying rhythm section. If there are more than four horns, simply divide the extras between the parts.
