In the same year that Tintinnabulum was composed (1999), Melinda Wagner was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music Composition for her Concerto for Flute, and she received a commission from the Chicago Symphony to compose a piano concerto for Emmanuel Ax. Although not a programmatic work, much of EXTREMITY OF SKY was written in the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001, and when Wagner later came across the phrase “extremity of the skies” in Act III of Shakespeare’s King Lear, she felt it expressed the atmosphere surrounding the composition of the work.
