He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he won first prize in Harmony. In 1866, he won the Grand Prix de Rome with his cantata “Dalila”. Pessard was a professor of Harmony at the Paris Conservatory and taught notable students such as Maurice Ravel and Jacques Ibert. He composed many comic operas, operettas, and masses.One of his notable compositions is the sacred hymn “O Salutaris,” first published in 1875. This hymn is a beautiful piece originally written for voice and organ or piano and is often performed in religious services.
