„Elegie" was written in the summer of 2012 and is a real character piece for the cello
that explores various disturbing, sometimes melancholic states in the form of a lament.
The
opening part of the composition is characterised by an expressive piano part that joins
in deep melancholy of the opposing cello part and further intensifies it.
This is followed by a
soulful, melodious middle section that reflects the warm, intimate sound
that the cello can especially create. The piano underscores this fragile mood with a few notes
of its own before the two voices gradually interweave.
The cello then finds its
greatest expressiveness in the melody, the sound, and the tone spreading.
The subsequent da capo section further highlights the moving contrasts of expressive sound and
longing for peace and harmony.
"My music should stimulate the senses. It should be memorable for the listener and set countlessfantasies free. This elegy (in c minor) seems to be particularly appealing to the senses..."(Michael Zschille, October 2019)
The "Elegie" was composed as a
performance piece, either in a concert setting or
to frame occasions of mourning.
Difficulty level: cello (medium), piano (medium to difficult)
