Die Werke der Klassiker der Alt-Wiener Tanzmusik erklangen nicht nur im grossen Ballsaal mit vollem orchestral music, sondern auch in der Intimitat des Privathauses: fur die zahlreichen Balle, die der Adel und das vornehme Burgertum in ihren Salons veranstalteten, entstand die (reduzierte) Kammermusik-Besetzung von 2 Violinen, Viola (bzw. 3 Violinen) und Kontrabass. Die klangstarkere Bassgeige trat an die Stelle des Cellos, das im klassischen Streichquartett den tiefsten Part ausfuhrte. Aus praktischen Grunden sind unseren Ausgaben Stimmen alternativ fur beide Bassinstrumente beigelegt. (Vorwort)

It epitomizes for many the essence of this old Hungarian dance-form with its juxtaposition of fast and slow. Extremely well laid out for string quartet by A. Graf, a double bass part is included. The first violin part stays in its usual form, and the others support the energetic off-beat rhythms in true Magyar style. In Doblinger's excellent Wiener Melange series.
