Playing concertos is one of the most fulfilling experiences a student has during the early years of piano study, and playing ensemble music is indispensable to acquiring overall musicianship. One of the best intermediate concertos

The composer, Catherine Rollin, says in her foreword, I wanted to give the intermediate pianist the experience of playing a concerto in the Classical style well before their first Mozart concerto. I think she succeeded beautifully. For the intermediate pianist who has experience with Clementi or Kuhlau sonatinas the entire concerto is very playable. Lots of opportunity to work on Classical issues: Alberti bass, balance between melody and accompaniment, scale passage work. In addition, the 1st and 3rd movements require attention to the ensemble, there is much back-and-forth between Piano I (Solo) and Piano II. The entire 2nd movement could be played as a solo piece since Piano II only adds a broken chord accompaniment on the 2nd page. Potential challenges here are 2:3, pedal, and creating a beautiful singing tone. It reminds me of Rollin's Lament from Lyric Moments Book 2, just shorter and easier, but with the same melancholic quality. Beautifully sweet, but not saccharine.
