British composer Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884) was in her mid 20’s when she wrote Concertino for Piano and Orchestra, originally entitled Introduction and Allegro. This new edition is based on an original hand-written manuscript that appears to be a first draft. The manuscript contains numerous errors and for the most part lacks dynamics, which are corrected and added by the editor. There is ample evidence that the piece was performed during the composer’s lifetime, but no known performances to date have been documented following the composer’s death.

Despite the many challenges faced by a female composer in Victorian-era Great Britain, Smith’s compositions during this period of her life received a high level of praise from the British press. Despite this early praise, Smith never received the long-term recognition her talents deserved. Due to a number of factors, her orchestral compositions were not even published until the early 2000s.
