The 8-string guitar opens up new possibilities for rendering these works, facilitating passages that were notoriously challenging on a 6-string. Bass lines have been judiciously added to the violin and cello works. [The arranger has specified certain of these works be played with a capo at the third fret. It will depend on the individual's instrument and hands as to whether this also yields the best result.] A lautenwerk was a keyboard instrument constructed to sound like a lute. The pieces Bach wrote for it have been played for years by guitarists while being described as transcribed from the lute; but it has since been determined that he did not write any music for the actual lute. While challenging, these works still tend to be more playable on guitar than most of Bach's keyboard compositions.
