By Nicolaus Bruhns
Organ

SKU: BR.EB-8663

Urtext. Composed by Nicolaus Bruhns. Edited by Harald Vogel. Solo instruments; stapled. Edition Breitkopf. Bruhns's organ oeuvre still raises many questions today. Harald Vogel's performance edition based on the sources attempts to tap the full potential of information found in the sources and to follow the original notation as closely as possible. Renaissance/early Baroque; Baroque. Score. 72 pages. Breitkopf and Haertel #EB 8663. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.EB-8663).

ISBN 9790004183069. 12 x 9 inches.

Harald Vogel eschews personal additions through analogical constructions, preferring instead to keep the user close to the original. This reprises the practice of his editions of Scheidt's "Tabulatura nova" and of Sweelinck's works. In the preface, a detailed commentary offers a discussion of the authorship of two dubious works that were included in the Appendix. There are also two lengthy essays focusing on the most important aspects of notation, interpretation and original instruments. "Harald Vogel's edition of Bruhns' organ works provides organists with a very useful and detailed score for this exciting repertoire that is recommended for every organist's library. The rich discussion of scholarly information are needed by the performer to make informed musical decisions." (HORP Report)

Bruhns's organ oeuvre still raises many questions today. Harald Vogel's performance edition based on the sources attempts to tap the full potential of information found in the sources and to follow the original notation as closely as possible.

Bruhns was highly praised by Buxtehude
I enjoy everything about Breitkopf and Hartels Urtext edition of Nicolaus Bruhns 3 preludes, 1 ChoralFantasie and Appendix with a section at the end of the book on Notation and Playing Techniques. A very worthy book for any musician with a scholarly bent.
