Chronicles is a bold fanfare piece from popular composer Larry Clark. Its majestic, strong style will make even the youngest of string players sound great. Simple three-part writing and contemporary harmonies make this piece a winner, and every section of the orchestra gets a chance to play some of the important melodic material.
Chronicles is a piece that is designed for the youngest of string students. It contains only the first six notes of the D scale (D through B) and the most difficult rhythms are quarter notes. I set out to write an upbeat fanfare-type piece that is similar to contest/ festival pieces students will encounter later on in their time in the orchestra. The piece begins right away with the main theme. This is followed by a repeat of the A section, which should be a little bit more forceful the second time. A bridge theme follows that is much more lyrical, first without the bass which is then added on to the second phrase to add color and depth to the sound. A development section then ensues, containing fragments of the main theme with interplay between the upper and lower strings. The B (or bridgexa0 heme) returns in a slightly altered form and is presented by the low brass and lower strings as the lead voice. This moves into a big build to the final statement of the main theme followed by a short coda to complete the work.It is my goal to stimulate all of the sections of the orchestra by providing them with parts that are interesting to play and integral to overall composition. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.-LARRY CLARKLakeland, FL 2012.
