Chronicle-19 is a musical narrative based on IIiana’s experiences during the Covid 19 pandemic. She shared with me that she went through an incremental recovery process after a traumatic fainting spell during an online lesson. The first movement depicts the fog and disorientation that characterized the first stages of this recovery, with faint recollections of the Tarrega’s Gran Jota – one of Iliana’s signature concert pieces. The second tells of her gradual return to a relationship with the guitar aided by revisiting the music of J.S. Bach; the movement features a fugal subject developed from materials borrowed, once again, from the Jota. The third movement represents the fullness of her return in a virtuosic and joyful Maxixe, a kind of Latin-American polka.

Chronicle-19 est un récit musical basé sur les expériences d'Iliana pendant la pandémie de Covid-19. Elle m'a confié avoir traversé un processus de rétablissement progressif après un évanouissement traumatisant lors d'un cours en ligne. Le premier mouvement dépeint le brouillard et la désorientation qui ont caractérisé les premières étapes de ce rétablissement, avec de faibles réminiscences de la Gran Jota de Tarrega – l'une des pièces de concert emblématiques d'Iliana. Le deuxième raconte son retour progressif à une relation avec la guitare, facilité par la redécouverte de la musique de J.S. Bach; le mouvement présente un sujet fugué développé à partir de matériaux empruntés, une fois de plus, à la Jota. Le troisième mouvement représente la plénitude de son retour dans une Maxixe virtuose et joyeuse, une sorte de polka latino-américaine.
