Changed Mah Name 4-Part - Sheet Music

Using SATB, a soloist, and piano, this traditional spiritual is given a rhythmic intensity that makes it fun to sing. The text seems naive: "Ah told Jesus it would be all right if he changed mah name", but beneath the surface the piece is a journey which touches on concepts such as Baptism (where we are given a "new name" in Christ) and the cost of discipleship. The text passes through requirement and controversy (and an extended piano interlude seems to mirror the difficulty of the decision.) Then the singers emerge with a new sense of resolve and the music ends in peacefulness. Equally effective in concert or worship settings.
