For us cellists, Bach’s Suites are pieces of music, with which we can challenge ourselves everyday of our lives aware that we would never reach a satisfactory result; and I believe this is their fascination. Composed between 1718 and 1723, they are so far from us, from the modern playing technique and from the peculiarities of the modern cello, that in reproducing them we have to face different problems not only of interpretative, but above all of technical and philological nature. My research aims at producing colours and articulations similar to those of that period while playing a modern cello with a modern bow and at discovering its limitations. This edition arises from my wish to share this work with people who have my same passion for music and my same love for cello and the Suites. I hope and I wish you that the present collection may stir the desire for further investigations and be a source of satisfaction and joy.
