Nicanor Santa Ana Abelardo was a Filipino composer who was known for writing love songs. He was born into an artistic family, and started playing music from the age of 5. He studied at the University of the Philippines Conservatory of Music, and graduated with a degree in science and music composition. He went on to become the university's head of the composition department and taught private music lessons on the side.
Abelardo's life was cut short when he died in 1934 of heart failure due to alcohol abuse. He was 41. He wrote nearly 150 music pieces, and played an important role in making the kundiman - traditional Filipino love songs - popular in the country.
This Cavatina was written in 1921, originally for violin and piano. It is arranged to fit and make good use of the clarinet range. This piece can be played for any occasion.
