He has said the lyrics were inspired not only by hearing the call of a blackbird while studying Transcendental Meditation in India, but also by the unrest of the Civil Rights movement in the late 1960s. He has also said that the first three notes of the song were inspired by Bourree in E minor by J.S. Bach.
