Mickey Guyton wrote “Black Like Me” at a Warner Chappell song camp in March 2019, drawing on a lifetime of personal experience — from playground taunts to her father working twice as hard just to afford an old house and a used car. The title echoes John Howard Griffin’s landmark 1961 book, in which a white journalist darkened his skin to pass as Black and travel through the segregated South. Guyton posted the song to Instagram in June 2020 with no label permission and no promotional fanfare, saying simply: “People need to hear this.” It earned her the first Grammy nomination in history for a Black female solo artist in a country category. Maddux’s TTB arrangement deploys rotating soloists — the song’s confessional verses practically demand them — against a full-chorus refrain, building to a proud, defiant close. Challenging, necessary, unforgettable.part-predominant rehearsal tracks and accompaniment track available at davidmaddux.com
