This opera is very strange, as it has two completely different versions happening at the same time. And t hey are well intigrated in this score, not put as is usual as an appendix. The opera was a smash hit in both its forms. The original was with spoken dialogue and in a single act, the second version with recitatives and in two acts (obviously with more music). Playing through it, I can't decide which version I liked better. I think one would have to actually watch the original version one night and the revises version the next to really see, and I think most of us would be left in the same state -- loving both for what they offer. The opera in either version isn't reallly all that long. And in the revised version, Betly sings a great deal more music. Great buy, and very interesting to study.
