In this scene, Ariel makes eye contact with Prince Eric from her balcony, and Sebastian reflects on his predicament while Ariel falls asleep. 'Bedtime' primarily uses the musical motifs from Les Poissons and Part of Your World. It opens with a musical motif depicting Prince Eric. This cue also incorporates the arpeggiated add2 chord motif, which Alan Menken wrote to convey the movement of ocean waves. The Little Mermaid (1989) score garnered Alan Menken his first 2 Academy Awards (best original score and best original song), with many more Oscar winnings to follow.
This arrangement includes some extended versions of the musical motifs.
