About Hal Leonard Bass Builders

Bass Builders is a series of technique book/audio packages created for the purposeful building and development of your chops. Each volume is written by an expert in that particular technique. And with the inclusion of audio - either CD or cassette - the added dimension of hearing exactly how to play particular grooves and techniques makes this truly like a private lesson.

For advanced players who reads standard notation

Ed Friedland is an accomplished player in most styles and this book deals with rather complicated jazz soloing and theory, at least from a rock players point of view. You can learn a great deal from this book, but you need to put your back into it. I would have given the book 5 stars had it not been for the omission of TAB. Standard notation may be fine for educated players, but most of us regular guys read TAB a lot better, and on a fretted instrument TAB eliminates the work of determining the smartest en most ergonomic way to lay out the lines on the fretboard. There are also a few longer solos that are not written out at all. I realize transcribing them would have meant extra work, but as a student you would have had a lot more to work with for a longer period of time. If you have a really good ear you can lift these solos from listening to the CD, but if you don't you will regard this omission as a minus.
