Boogie Woogie and the walking bass come to life in this sly and inventive piece. An easy selection to play, this is an entertaining revival of a popular style of the past. Tthe swinging flavor of the music will give pleasure to the young performers and their audience.
Banana Boogie is written in the style of the swing blues rhythm that was originally played on the piano and called "boogie-woogie." during the 1930s, the strict blues form was being used more in jazz recordings as the tempos were speeding up. In the years just before 1940, the blues form of boogie-woogie became a popular fad. All during the 1940s boogie influenced many of the arrangements for the big bands. Swing bands found great success when they added the element of boogie.During the 1950s this kind of dance music was called rock and roll. The dance, "boogie-woogie," can be danced to various kinds of rock music. Today, the dance is usually called "East Coast Swing."If Banana Boogie is played in the true swing style, the bass line as played on the piano will be in broken octaves with a syncopated rhythm. It will be great for you to experiment with the rhythm and the tempo and get it to move like real dance music. You can also change from legato notes to detached notes and then back again. You can also vary the sound by having some instruments play pizzicato at times. Please feel free to have fun with Banana Boogie and make it into your own piece by changing the style, tempo, and even notes if you think you would like to try it.
