This hymn has long been claimed to be the work of Martin Luther, but researchers now believe that it may be completely American in origin. The two tunes employed are by William J. Kirkpatrick and James Ramsey Murray. Americans typically use the melody by Kirkpatrick (sometimes known as "Mueller"), while the common melody in England is the one by Murray (also known as "Cradle Song").
