Ave Maris Stella arr. for string quartet String Quartet - Digital Sheet Music

This is a short string quartet featuring a Gregorian melody on violin with harmony provided in the lower voices by violin, viola and cello. It is meant to be played in a free chant style with rubato; however, mixed meters are provided to give an approximate idea of the counting. This piece would be suitable for a school or church setting and is derived from ancient sacred music written for the Catholic Church. It is quite an easy piece in D Dorian mode, thus no sharps or flats. The quiet beauty of this piece is suitable for meditative or concert use. An interlude of gentle improvisation could be added with a repeat of the theme at the end if a longer piece is desired (permission to do that hereby granted). Students, teachers and church music directors as well as professional musicians looking for a short easy work may find this a useful addition to their repertoire. (Please note: the audio recording is a guide and does not necessarily reflect the proper phrasing as indicated in the score.)
