Poulton's compositions, particularly "Aura Lea," became popular during the American Civil War and were later featured in college glee clubs and barbershop quartets. The tune was also sung at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. In 1956, the tune was given new lyrics and released as the Elvis Presley song "Love Me Tender." Poulton's musical legacy continues to be celebrated, and his descendants still have connections with Cricklade. He passed away in 1867, leaving behind a rich musical heritage.
