Simone Mantia was an Italian-born musician who immigrated to New York City with his family in 1890. Mantia was a true virtuoso of his era, performing with the Sousa Band, and later with the Arthur Pryor Band. While not performing either on euphonium or trombone, he composed many theme-and-variations for B-flat instruments. These theme-and-variations have become staples of the repertoire and are still performed, and studied, by young euphonium performers the world over. 'Auld Lang Syne' is a Scots poem written by Robert Burns in 1788, and set to the tune of a traditional folk song. This well-known melody is mostly used to celebrate the start of the New Year at the stroke of midnight, but also is used as a farewell or ending to other occasions. The title, 'Auld Lang Syne' may be translated literally as 'Old Long Since' or more idiomatically 'Days Gone By' or 'Long Long Ago', either way the equivalent of 'Once upon a time...'.
