70 new settings of contemporary hymn texts. Lim Swee Hong is the Deer Park Associate Professor of Sacred Music, and Director of the Master of Sacred Music Program at Emmanuel College of Victoria University in the University of Toronto, Canada. As Karen B. Westerfield Tucker writes in the foreword, the setting of these texts in a non-Western musical style invites a new hearing and interpretation of the words and, in some cases, may challenge the cultural captivity of a text to a commonly used tune. Such an encounter may occur when singing Fred Pratt Green's "When in Our Music God Is Glorified" to a new rhythmically driven African-inspired tune (with optional drum part) instead of Charles V. Stanford's stately ENGELBERG. A similar experience may occur with the African style setting of Shirley Erena Murray's "For Everyone Born" with the very appropriate tune name KARIBU, Swahili for "welcome.".
