Alfonsina Carolina Storni, argentine poet, playwright, and essayist, was born on May 29th, 1892, in the village of Sala Capriasca near Lugano in Southern Switzerland.
Alfonsina Storni is considered one of the most prominent Latin-American women poets of the twentieth century. Inspired by her own per- sonal experiences, she courageously wrote about the struggles of the individual woman in mod- ern society.
In October 1938, after several years of suffer- ing from recurring cancer and because of her long and painful love affairs, she decided to end her tragic life. On October 18th Alfonsina rented a room in Mar del Plata, south of Buenos Aires Province. On October 20th, she wrote what was to be her final poem, Voy a dormir (I Am Going to Sleep) and, two days later, sent it to her only son and to the editorial office of the prestigious newspaper La Nación.
In the early hours of October 25th, while the public read her last poem, Alfonsina Carolina Storni walked into the ocean at La Perla Beach and drowned herself.
Four years later, near the spot where the sea had swal- lowed one of Argentina’s greatest female writers, a large granite monument was erected in her honor.
In 1939 the composer Ariel Ramirez wrote his mas- terpiece, Alfonsina y el Mar (Alfonsina and the Sea) with lyrics by Felix Luna. Alfonsina y el Mar quickly became one of the most famous and celebrated South
American songs.

Alfonsina Carolina Storni, poète, drama- turge et essayiste argentine est née le 29 mai 1892 à Sala Capriasca, village voisin de Lu- gano en Suisse italienne (Tessin/Ticino). Elle est considérée à ce jour comme l’une des plus importantes poétesse d’Amérique Latine.
Guidée par son expérience personnelle, c’est avec courage qu’elle écrivit sur le combat individuel des femmes dans la société de son époque.
Après plusieurs années de douloureuses his- toires d’amour mêlées à un cancer récurrent, elle décida, en octobre 1938, de mettre fin à ses jours. Après avoir loué une chambre, le 18 octobre à Mar del Plata (sud de la province de Buenos Aires), elle écrivit, deux jours plus tard, celui qui serait son dernier poème : Voy a dormir (je m'en vais dormir). Le 22 octobre, elle enverra conjointement ce poème à son fils unique et au célèbre quotidien argentin La Nación.
Alors que le public découvrait cet ultime poème dans la presse, Alfonsina Carolina Storni entra dans l’océan puis se noya au large de la plage de La Perla. C’était au petit matin du 25 octobre.
Quatre ans plus tard, non loin de l’endroit où la mer engloutit l’un des plus grands écrivains d’Argentine, un vaste monument de granit fut érigé à sa mémoire.
En 1939, Ariel Ramirez composa son chef d’œuvre Alfonsina y el mar sur des paroles de Felix Luna. Cette chanson ne tarda pas à devenir un hymne pour tous les Sud-Américains.
