aîné / StS für Blechbläser und Perkussion Percussion - Sheet Music

At the heart of the piece is an elder tree, rich in years ("aîné"). Its alluringly fragrant, creamy-white blossoms herald the arrival of summer. In contrast to this signal of early summer are the grey-brown, corky, and fissured bark and the tangled growth of the elder tree, which even from its youth seem to indicate advanced age. This ambivalence of time creates an almost mystical effect. The piece is scored for brass instruments (4 trumpets, 2 horns, euphonium, 3 trombones, and tuba) and 4 percussionists, and traces the course of a wonderful early summer day, perhaps evoking the image of a ritualized country festival: While nature sets the tone in the early morning—a rhythmic swishing on the various drums followed by dark brass chords—the day builds to its exuberant climax with syncopated trumpets and horns. This development takes the form of a dance, which is repeatedly distorted and countered by phrases from a hymn. A tonal wind melody briefly glimpses the utopia of a united society before the drums, played with brushes, cause the radiant image of ecological and social harmony to fade and erase all traces of the eventful day.
