At the heart of the piece is an elder tree, rich in years ("aîné"). Its alluringly fragrant, creamy-white blossoms herald the arrival of summer. In contrast to this signal of early summer are the grey-brown, corky, and fissured bark and the tangled growth of the elder tree, which even from its youth seem to indicate advanced age.
