About a Tree Piano Quintet - Digital Sheet Music
About a Tree was commissioned by the Australian architecture company m3architecture, and is a musical commemoration of their memorial for the 'Tree of Knowledge', a legendary tree in rural Australia under which the Australian Labor Party was founded in 1892. The tree was poisoned in 2006, and the remaining stump of the tree is commemorated in a pavilion designed by m3architecture and Brian Hooper. The composition tells the story of the tree, at first elegiac and then energetic, beginning and ending with a piano motif that portrays the cathedralesque pavilion, in which 3600 hanging timber beams of different length create the outline of the old tree.
