Fantasia to large symphonic orchestra based on themes of the world famous choral work 'Miserere' by Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652) and on W. A. Mozart's motet 'Ave verum Corpus'. Its program, in Liszt's words, says: 'Man's misery and anguish are expressed in Miserere: God's infinite mercy and attention.. reply and sing.. in Ave verum corpus..'. Liszt composed the work in Rome in 1862, but the exact date of instrumentation (orchestral score) is not known-presumably it was also 1862 or 1863. The work is also known in piano, organ and piano duet versions.
