In 1863 John Hopkins composed Gather Around the Christmas Tree. It’s harmonic structure and ending (Hosanna in the Highest) are very similar to Ding Dong! Merrily On High. Thispiece was a secular dance tune from the 1500’s. After being used for various settings, the Christmas words and music that we know today were published in 1924. Together theymake a joyous piece to perform at Christmas time on Lever or Pedal Harps.
