Fingering
The Opus 87 is one of my favorite piano works - astoundingly inventive and great fun to play - but it is NOT for the faint-hearted!Perhaps a small number of the preludes and fewer of the fugues are appropriate for an upper intermediate pianist (even so, interpretation is generally an issue) but these are ADVANCED compositions, requiring significant technical prowess. This difficulty implies that unless an individual is both willing and able to devise fingerings that work not only for their hands, but also for their interpretation, the Opus 87 is probably a poor choice. For example, so far I have spent about three hours working on fingering the Prelude in E minor (#4) but am only about 70% done and only about 95% happy with my fingerings so far; and this is a prelude with a very simple left hand. Although I highly recommend the Opus 87, it is not for novices. Intermediate pianists might want to bash through them for fun, and even bring a few up to speed, but do think they are simple.
