"Summer Suite" by award-winning composer Greg Bartholomew is a luminous, evocative three-movement work for trumpet and piano (also available for other accompaniments). Commissioned by a consortium of six trumpet soloists from across the United States, the suite captures the vibrant, nostalgic essence of mid-century Americana, weaving a soundscape that reviewers have compared to the poetic, expressive styles of Aaron Copland and Alan Hovhaness.The suite is deeply evocative of the carefree moods and playful imagery of childhood fun, unfolding across three distinct movements that paint a vivid musical picture: Popsicle Rocket Sunrise: A bright, rhythmically driven opening that suggests the pure energy and liberating freedom of being out and about on the street when the popsicle man comes by. Still Life with Melon & Sand: A movement that beautifully contrasts a deep, spacious tranquility with playful motion, evoking the quiet stillness of a hot beach that is suddenly interrupted by a frantic chase scene of kids running after one another on the hot sand. Red Cherry Lark: A joyful, high-spirited finale that moves with brilliant syncopation. The title does not refer to a bird; rather, "lark" is meant in the sense of a fun, lighthearted adventure, while "red cherry" is simply a bright, festive summery color. Throughout the suite, the music brilliantly showcases the trumpet's dual nature, seamlessly balancing its brilliant, fanfare-like agility with a warm, vocal lyricism.
