200 Last Verses - Organ Organ Popular Hymn Tunes Varied Harmonies by Noel Rawsthorne Organ - Sheet Music

By Noel Rawsthorne

There are few musical pleasures more spine-tingling than a really good organ arrangement of the last verse of a hymn. Noel Rawsthorne is a master at providing a touch of spice to the harmonies of an unsuspecting hymn tune, but also knows what is possible on the average church organ. In these books you will find colorful, manageable arrangements requiting only moderate technique. The composer's many years as an organist enable him to compose music that encourages enjoyment of hymn singing without distractions that confuse the congregation. In these arrangements, much of the original harmonic schemes of the hymn tunes are retained while exploring new harmonic possibilities. These books are eminently useful beside the standard hymnals of many churches, as it presents hymn tunes in the keys most commonly used. Where more than one key is common, two versions of the hymn improvisation are included. These settings are the perfect addition to the organist's repertoire for enlivening congregational singing.

    Highly useful resource

One review says these tunes are not used in mainstream worship, so it would be wise to check the list of tunes against those in your hymnal. The large majority of these tunes are in the Episcopalian hymnal and many others with which I am familiar. I used this book extensively in one church where I played, especially for the final hymn, since the harmonies add a bit of interest and excitement. There are additional volumes by the same composer.

    Best anthology of alternate harmonies!

This is a great tool in hymn playing for almost any level of organist.

    Not very useful

Expensive resource with limited usefulness. Most of the Hymns are not used in mainstream American worship. Wish I had not wasted my money
