The Best

This little book made me into a pianist. The shortness of the individual exercises disguises the enormous amount of ground they cover, some of which might seem familiar to those who know the exercises of Hanon, Czerny and Brahms, but the concise format used here simplifies the idea of technique, while still requiring as much hard work as any other training. There are, after all, no short cuts to exceptional virtuosity.Even the Hour a Day of the title is deceptive, since one can work very usefully for a mere ten minutes on any exercise which deals with one's own personal weaknesses. The Hour is only a suggested timeframe for covering a wide range of techniques in one session, if that's what one wishes to accomplish.Of course the book does not replace a teacher in any way - Eric Harrison was, himself, a marvellous pianist and teacher, but it is an invaluable source to keep in one's library as a brilliant technical tool which seeks to avoid the stress of mindless repetition.
