I love playing these -- some are fairly easy to sightread but still sound sophisticated, while others are a bit more demanding and just so much fun when it all starts feeling natural.

If you're looking for a more poppy jazz like the Martha Mier Jazz, Rags, and Blues, this is not for you. This is a less watered down jazz with a more authentic sound than what I call the "kiddy jazz." Keveren's arrangements are fantastic, especially "Deck the Hall...

" and "Carol of the Bells," which both make fantastic Christmas recital finales. I've used at least one of these arrangements in every Christmas recital for the last few years and have always gotten great feedback from the parents.

I recently bought a slew of intermediate/early advanced jazz Christmas books, and this one is by far my favorite. As a jazz lover, I've been disappointed with other jazz Christmas books. But Keveren's arrangements have a sophisticated sound with unique chord combinations that deliver a true jazz...

sound, at times deliciously dissonant, but always resolved beautifully.

  • September 09, 2010 Musical appeal sacrified to add jazz component

These standard Christmas songs were given a jazz interpretation, which done well, I really like adding to most music. But in the process of adding the jazz sound, these pieces failed to also be musically appealing. I played them once through and will probably never play them again. Keverson has...

produced other Christmas music that is enjoyable, so I was both surprised and disappointed.
