Meaning "snow festival" in Japanese, Yuki Matsuri takes the listener on a journey through the winter festivals of Japan. Clark has such a way of making you smile through his music. There is, however, plenty of sophistication and musicality required to play this one, and would serve nicely on a festival program.
Yuki Matsuri means "snow festival" in Japanese. The idea of this piece is to depict a beautiful snow-filled day with lots of winter activities. The main melody is based upon a pentatonic scale and should have a nice lilt. The piece starts out with a melodic fragment from the main theme that builds in a pyramid fashion leading to the dominant. The main theme is then stated with a pizzicato bass line and light accompaniment figures. The repeat of the main theme adds the cello on the tune for more depth. This is followed by a secondary section with a duet in the violins. The light style is interrupted with a lush legato melody in the cello and thick harmonies in the other strings as contrast to the main-theme section. The piece then contains interplay and various different orchestrations of these three sections and is completed with a short coda based on the introductory material.
