ISBN 9780786659586. Gospel-Old Time. 8.75 x 11.75 inches.

Seasoned piano educator Gail Smith offers this beginning-level piano method employing gospel, Christmas, and sacred tunes. The book begins with an introduction to elementary note reading on the piano, then progresses to exercises and arrangements. To illustrate various arranging concepts, some tunes are shown in two ways - one simple, the other more detailed. A brief dictionary of musical terms and a basic piano chord encyclopedia are also included. Before you know it, you will be creating your own gospel piano arrangements! The book comes with accompanying audio.

  • June 09, 2013 You Can Teach Yourself to Play Gospel

At first - being an intermediate player, and that is a stretch - I thought these songs were going to be too hard. But, after listening to the CD and playing them, I have enjoyed it very much - really great broken chord practice and I love the arrangements. A good buy.

  • June 03, 2013 Love this book!

As an older lday (71) who has only had a few years (3) of music, I found this book to be of great help. Love the songs she chose and, of course, the CD helped me hear how the songs should sound. I am playing them slowly now, but with...

practice, I know I can master them.

  • January 20, 2009 Covers Topics too Broadly

Though Gail Smith has a beautiful style, this book seems to cover too much to be of any real instructional help. It starts out assuming the student has never read music, but ends with arrangements that are for later intermediate players. I didn't find a lot I could actually...

apply to my gospel playing. As I already read music, the first half of the book was unnecessary. Yet I couldn't recommend it to a beginner either as it moves along far too quickly. She encourages more listening at the end of the book than actually playing the songs.
