Back to School 2015:Giovanni Gabrieli's Sonata XIX is one of many many works written for the Basilica of St.. Mark's in Venice during the last half of the 16th century, part of what became known as the "Venetian polychoral style". This work, by composer Geoffrey Gordon, is a realization of that astonishing choral masterpiece, set for mixed wind ensemble and multiple percussion. Due to the design of the Basilica (built in the shape of a Greek cross, with each arm of the cross having a nave, side aisles and a choir loft), having a choir in each loft try to sing with the others was acoustically impossible. The solution, which took full advantage of the great distances between the choirs, was to have opposing choirs imitate each other, in polyphonic waves. The woodwinds and brass in Geoffrey Gordon's realization of XIX are organized in sub-choirs in order to capture this astonishing effect. The mixed percussion adds a contemporary flavor to the otherwise Renaissance harmonic language.
