Solo piano - SMP Level 8 (Early Advanced)
Composed by Edward MacDowell (1861-1908). Edited by Willard A. Palmer. Masterworks; Piano Collection. Alfred Masterwork Library. Romantic Period, Instructional and Method. Collection. Standard notation, fingerings and introductory text (does not include words to the songs). 32 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.2278).

Item Number: AP.2278

With standard notation, fingerings and introductory text (does not include words to the songs). Romantic Period, Instructional and Method. 9x12 inches.

This suite of tone poems has survived as MacDowell's best-known work. Included among the 10 pieces are the familiar miniatures, "To a Wild Rose" and "Will o' the Wisp." The last work of the set, "Told at Sunset" reiterates a considerable amount of thematic material from earlier works, making the suite especially effective when performed in its entirety. The pieces are similar in difficulty to "Sea Pieces," Op. 55.

This title has selections that range in difficulty from SMP Level 5-8.

Attractive cover. A good introduction to the work of MacDowell. Well presented and easy to read. Satisfying to perform.

  • April 26, 2009 Excellent variety of short pieces

I was first introduced to Edward MacDowell's piano music by my teacher in my second or third year of lessons as a youngster, many years ago. I recommend it for piano teaching. Especially lovely and haunting are 'To A Wild Rose', 'Trysting Place', and 'Deserted Farm'. They are quite...

easy to learn--Early Intermediate. A few of the other pieces are a bit more difficult. This sheet music is very well produced. The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, named for Edward MacDowell, is a special retreat for selected musicians--and a charming place for all to visit.

  • October 03, 2007 Gotta love "To A Wild Rose"

I ordered this book just to have "To a Wild Rose." I played it in a wedding while the flower girls walked down the aisle, and it was PERFECT! Unfortunately, I can't give feedback about the rest of the sketches because they are still unfamiliar to me. Overall, I...

thought the book was a good price.

The music is wonderful. This is the first time I played MacDowell's music, and have fallen in love with it. The harmonies are great, and the music is easy to read.

This volume is worth buying even if it contained only No. 1-"To a Wild Rose." But many of the other pieces are very effective as well, such as "At an Old Trysting Place," "To a Water Lily," "By a Meadow Brook"(this is the most challenging piece in the...

suite), and "Told at Sunset." And it's only 6.00!
