John Rutter has breathed new life into several traditional hymns through his intelligent arrangements, published in 2000. "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" is typical of his approach. The first verse is the done with the original four part harmony. Then he adds new harmonies to each of the inner...

verses, varying the voice that carries the melody: first the tenors, then sopranos and altos, in a softer, more intimate dynamic. Then he finishes with full organ and unison choir with a rousing soprano descant on the final verse. The pieces are not difficult to learn for any church choir. They are all beautiful, and bring back so many memories of growing up in an Anglican men and boys choir. I highly recommend them.
