When I'm Sixty-four

When I'm Sixty-four composed by The Beatles. Arranged by Ramon Ricker. For saxophone quartet (soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones). Classic rock, britpop and psychedelic rock. Grade 4. Set of performance parts. Published by Kendor Music Inc (KN.16410).

In this setting of the Beatles hit, the familiar song moves through a series of appealing styles -- Dixieland, subito half-time, presto 2-feel -- for added depth and dimension. While all parts are important, bari sax plays an especially prominent role at style transitions, culminating in a closing solo cadenza. Duration 2:30.

We loved the first half of the arrangement in 4/4 time with that Dixieland feel to it so reminiscent of the original. We took it a little faster than the 126 marked though, and felt that around 132 made it just that bit jauntier. The harmonies and arrangement in...

this first section were just right for us but I'm sorry to say that we hated the second half of the arrangement. We felt that in 2/4 time at the marked tempo of 160 and with 'straight' quavers the second half of the arrangement belonged more to Loony Tunes than the Beatles, and even when we tried playing 'swing' quavers it just didn't work. We felt that the 2/4 treatment of it wasn't in keeping with the spirit of the original which is so well known by everyone who is going to hear it, and I'm sorry to say that because of this we decided not to use it.

We've had a lot of fun playing this piece. It's not overly difficult but there are style, key, and meter changes. Overall it's fun to play and our audiences seem to love it.
