Chopin's waltzes caused controversies. They reached a peak of popularity and were treated by many as masterpieces, by others as gravitating towards drawing-room music. Along with the nocturnes and impromptus, they are regarded as part of a "female" trend in Chopin's output. The "Complete Works" is the best known and most popular series of editions of Fryderyk Chopin's works, prepared by Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Ludwik Bronarski and Jozef Turczynski. The aim of the editorial committee was as faithful a rendition of the composer's intention as possible by firmly basing the publication on manuscripts, copies approved by Chopin himself as well as the forst editions. The whole consists of 21 volumes.

This title has selections that range in difficulty from SMP Level 7-10.

These continental editions are top quality, more generously spaced than the (overpriced) Verlag editions, and are truly an easy-to-read value. Mine (4 total) were well boxed and bend-proofed.

This book was exactly what I hoped it would be. It replaced a 30 year old, very worn and much loved copy of the Complete Works of Chopin.

  • August 30, 2008 Waltzes: Too Beautiful For Dancing?

Having long enjoyed listening to waltzes à la Chopin, my curiosity finally got the best of me. What do such otherworldly sounds look like in black and white on the staves, before they become a work of artistry heard on the piano? Often much more complicated than I expected... and occasionally...

, much simpler! The sheer authority of these Paderewski editions is underscored by the extensive "commentary" notes appended at the end of the volume. One quickly appreciates how each of the pieces has taken on a life of its own. From the composer's own revisions on down through publications scattered throughout Europe, the smallest details of notation and phrasing, as they differ in notation from different manuscript sources are presented. Daunting musical scholarship, to say the least!
