When this song was heard being sung during the days of slavery, it was a signal for the slaves to run to the nearest body of water to keep the chasing bloodhounds from being able to detect their scent. Therefore, this is a song of social significance prior to the Civil War. Sing this arrangement with feeling. It's of a moderate level of singing experience. Of great importance is having a nice round, deep and expressive bass voice to sing the solo part throughout the song.
