  • January 11, 2009 One Awesome Challenge!

J.J. Johnson had a range on trombone equal to Maynard Ferguson's on trumpet (reread your Fred Fox book, then go for it). This music book is an excellent way to learn to both play and appreciate be-bop. What a ride to get into the mind of one...

of the greatest jazz trombonists ever. I achieved a semi-professional level of play after a music minor in college, but I slacked off playing for pleasure, the only option available for us female brass players. You sure don't learn to play jazz like this at any level of schooling, so I guess unless you have some sort of access to a jazz great--like through this book--you just don't get to play jazz like this. I'm having a ball! My kind of music? Intricate, regardless of genre. The transcriptions are perfect. Because of this, I now have a whole new appreciation for what a truly great talent J.J. Johnson was. Wow.
