  • July 24, 2006 The first book to help me in years.

As a 30-year casual trumpeter, I had not made much progress in years. Once I tried this book, I noticed real progress within weeks, particularly with an expanded range without resetting my chops (none of the parts are high, but there are some two-octave runs.) There are just...

enough awkward fingerings and fairly large jumps while multiple-tounguing to force me to improve. Vizzutti plays these exercises a little faster than most other Arban recordings I've heard. It may take you months or more to approach the fastest sections, but it will be helping noticably. To my ear, Vizzutti does not really have the tone and soft attack of a true classical player, but he has plenty to teach you and me, nevertheless. The recording is miked a little dry, such that you can hear him breathe and you get a good sense of his tounguing technique, allowing you to intuit more. My copy has a few minor glitches on the CD, but nothing too serious.
