Remembered as the dedicatee of Beethoven's Violin Sonata Opus 47, Kreutzer was a leading exponent of the French violin school and composed an influential set of violin studies, the 42 Etudes or Caprices still used to this day. This concerto is one of 19 that he wrote before 1810 when his solo playing career was cut tragically short in a carriage accident in which his arm was broken.
